When she opened her eyes and turned her tired head,

She saw her long-loved Prince, waiting patiently by her bed.

He held out his wrinkled hand, whispering “My love, it’s time to go.”

She smiled back at him, her constant strength, and simply replied “I know.”

For so many years she served us faithfully,

A silhouette of reassurance and dignity.

Still smiling through loss and challenge,

While she toiled on for people and country.

With a smile that lit up the world,

She pledged to keep her life of duty.

But still made time to unite us,

With laughter and inviting bears to tea.

The Queen who was never expected to be,

Turned out to be one of our greatest.

An inspirational figurehead,

To be loved and remembered in history.

As he helped her to her feet, her cane fell to the floor,

It was no longer needed – they were young once more.

She met his loving smile with a glorious one of her own.

And tucked her hand in his, and followed her Prince home.

He guided her over the rainbow bridge,

That flew above her castle and flag,

(no doubt with that marmalade sandwich, Still tucked safely in her bag).

And though she will be missed,

By people far and wide.

She is finally reunited with her Prince.

Forever able to walk side by side.

Thank you, Ma’am, for your service. Rest in Peace.
